The Settle to Carlisle line runs over the central Pennines, and at its highest point is 1,168 feet above sea level. Ex-BR ‘Britannia Class 4-6-2 No. 70000 ‘Britannia’ is near the start of the 15-mile climb to the line’s summit as it passes the Yorkshire town of Settle, heading the ‘Cumbrian Guardsman’ railtour on 2nd March 2013. The doyen of the Class, ‘Britannia’ was rejected for the National Collection because of its poor mechanical condition. However, it was privately purchased, and after one period of main line running in the 1990s, it was restored again to main line condition in 2012.
