Ex-LMS ‘Coronation’ Class 4-6-2 No. 46233 ‘Duchess of Sutherland’ is at Birkett Common, on the 1 in 100 southbound climb to the summit of the Settle to Carlisle line at Ais Gill, with the ‘Cumbrian Mountain Express’ on 22nd May 2013. This class of locomotive, designed by Sir William Stanier, was the ultimate express locomotive of the LMS. This privately preserved engine had been running on the main line for a number of years in LMS red livery, but at the time of this photograph had been overhauled into the BR green livery in which it ran for many years in normal service.
