This combination illustrates and compares the final development of express steam motive power in the UK. In front is ex-BR Class 8P 4-6-2 No. 71000 ‘Duke of Gloucester’. This ‘one off’ was built in 1954 to replace the ex-LMS pacific ‘Princess Anne’ which had been destroyed in the Harrow and Wealdstone disaster in 1952. The design did not prove entirely successful, but since steam was already running down, no attempts were made to sort out the problems. It eventually languished in Woodhams scrapyard in Barry, from where it was recovered and restored to working order. The earlier problems were ironed out to provide a very successful locomotive. The other loco is ‘A1’ Class 4-6-2 No. 60163 ‘Tornado’. It is actually a recent build to the design introduced just prior to nationalisation of the railways. These 50 locos proved to be very successful, but due to the elimination of steam in the early 1960s had a much too short life. None were preserved, hence the construction of Tornado. The train is Pathfinder’s ‘Tamar Devonian’ returning from Plymouth to Bristol, viewed starting the climb to Whiteball at Westleigh.
