Ex-LMS ‘Coronation’ Class 4-6-2 No. 46233 ‘Duchess of Sutherland’ is on the 1 in 125 southbound climb to Shap Summit at Great Strickland on 26th May 2012 with the ‘Citadel Express’ from Lincoln to Carlisle, which 46233 hauled from Crewe to Carlisle and back. This class of locomotive, designed by Sir William Stanier, was the ultimate express locomotive of the LMS, and would have been seen in this location in daily service hauling such trains as the ‘Royal Scot’ and the ‘Caledonian’. This privately preserved engine had been running on the main line for a number of years in LMS red livery, but at the time of this photograph had been overhauled into the BR green livery in which it ran for many years in normal service.
