The last run of the Atlantic Coast Express from Waterloo to the West of England took place on 5th September 1964. To commemorate the 50th Anniversary, a special ‘Atlantic Coast Express’ was run from London to Plymouth and on to Penzance on 05/09/14 and return on 08/09/14. It retraced most of the original route to and from Exeter, but since the ex-SR route to Plymouth had long since closed, it had to use the ex-GWR route via Dawlish from Exeter. On the return run, with appropriate motive power ex-SR ‘BB’ Class 4-6-2 34067 ‘Tangmere’, it is approaching Honiton tunnel on the ex-SR main line.
