A view of the original double track section between Burngullow and Probus the year before this section of line was singled. In 1985, the 150th anniversary of the Great Western Railway was celebrated with a number of special steam trains. The line through Cornwall from Plymouth to Penzance crossed very uneven terrain, with many steep inclines and numerous viaducts. The original viaducts, constructed by Brunel, were progressively replaced in the 20th Century, and this view of ex-GWR ‘Castle’ Class 4-6-0 7029 ‘Clun Castle’ crossing St.Stephens Combe viaduct in September 1985 shows remains of the piers of the original viaduct alongside the newer structure in use today.
