Day 1 Saturday 29th April : London – York – Edinburgh

The train was hauled from Kings Cross to York by ex-LNER ‘A3’ Class 4-6-2 60103 ‘Flying Scotsman’, and is here seen at Colton Junction on the approach to York.  The trip was scheduled to continue from York to Edinburgh behind ex-LNER ‘A4’ Class 4-6-2 60009 ‘Union of South Africa’.  This loco had been under overhaul during the winter, and despite frantic efforts to get the engine ready in time for this trip, a number of technical problems at the last moment prevented it from taking part.  The train was therefore diesel hauled from York to Edinburgh
