Ex-Somerset and Dorset Railway 2-8-0 No.13809 is crossing Capernwray Viaduct on the route from Carnforth to Hellifield on what was then the ‘bottom leg’ of a Cumbrian Mountain Express on Easter Saturday 1984.  This is one of two survivors of a class of 11 locomotives designed by Henry Fowler for heavy freight work on the much lamented Somerset & Dorset Railway.  Whilst designed primarily for freight on this heavily graded route over the Mendip Hills, these powerful locomotives were often to be seen on summer special passenger trains.
